Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, which is a pity because this week the National Association of Beholders wrote to tell me that I've got a face like a rucksack full of dented bells.

About This Quote

The National Association of Beholders is a group of people who have very different opinions on beauty. Some think that physical beauty is malleable, that it can be altered by surgery. Others think that physical beauty is hard-wired into our genes, passed down from generation to generation. The beholders are running a campaign to change the definition of beauty in the English language, demanding that the word "beautiful" must mean "attractive." The beholders don't want to change it because they think the word "beautiful" should describe something that isn't necessarily pretty.

It's no coincidence that this campaign comes at a time when many people are obsessed with plastic surgery. At the same time, lots of people are desperately trying to change their appearance, whether by using Botox or other cosmetic procedures. Both sides in this debate claim that beauty is independent of external appearance.

However, it's important to remember that no matter how much we try, appearances are not truly independent. They're controlled by laws of physics and our bodies are shaped by genetics. We all look different because we're all shaped differently.

And while we might not be able to change our looks completely, we can do something about them.
